Compulsive sexual behavior and problematic pornography use
Compulsive Sexual Behaviour Disorder (CSBD) is defined by patterns of behaviour, but those behaviours alone tell us very little about why the problem developed or what may be needed for recovery. Two people can present with remarkably similar behaviours yet have very different developmental histories, vulnerabilities and therapeutic needs. In this presentation, Dr Paula Hall introduces the ATE Model, a new integrative framework for exploring three key domains that may contribute to vulnerability to CSBD: Attachment, Trauma and Environment. Rather than seeking a single cause, the model considers how different combinations of relational experiences, adverse experiences, sexual learning, cultural influences and the contemporary digital environment may shape the development and function of compulsive sexual behaviours. Using brief clinical examples, Paula will demonstrate how looking beyond the presenting behaviour can support more individualised, compassionate assessment and help inform therapeutic priorities.
